Just west of the coast lies a world of cattle trails, lighthouse lanterns and rivers with no roads. The people who lived there left their stories behind. Step into their world, discover which of them your family would have been, then set out to explore the Everglades as them.

People have lived around Lake Okeechobee for thousands of years. The Belle Glade culture built large earthworks and canals near the lake, including Big Mound City, a site now inside J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area. Later, Seminole and Miccosukee families made the Everglades their home and traveled it by dugout canoe. Both tribes still live in the Everglades today and tell their own history at the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum on the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation.
